The striped bass got its name from the seven to nine stripes that run along the side of its body lengthwise.
The striped bass grows between 1.5 and 4.5 feet in length and can weigh up to 70 pounds. That is the weight of many fourth graders!
The striped bass is a predator. The diet of the striped bass consists of fish, crabs, squid, and other invertebrates. The striped bass has two patches of teeth on its tongue. This adaptation allows it to eat its prey.
Humans like to fish and eat striped bass. For a long time humans were not allowed to eat striped bass that came from the Hudson River. The striped bass became poisonous to humans because of the chemicals that polluted the Hudson River.
The habitat of the striped bass is both the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean. The adult striped bass lives in the Hudson River in May and June to spawn and lay its eggs. After the adult striped bass lay its eggs, it swims back to the ocean. The eggs hatch and the young striped bass live in the Hudson River until the fall when they swim out to the Atlantic Ocean.
